Upvan at Sealdah

Upvan Vocational Training unit is a joint venture of Divya Chaya Trust & CINI Asha. Save A Child Trust, U.K. is also associated with this project & has contributed handsomely. The center situated amidst a thickly minority populated area acts as a day care shelter for teen-age girls who might otherwise be in moral danger. These girls are given special care & are counselled regularly. Since school dropouts seems to be a major problem in this area, the girls are encouraged to take up vocational training after imparting basic education.

A number of awareness programs are also conducted keeping in mind the spacial need of the locality. The center confers basic vocational training in the afternoons, 2 - 5 P.M. The special skills, like tailoring and handicraft are aimed at making the girls self-sufficient in the future. The most challenging feature of this center is, it provides placement to needy & skilled candidates.

Exquisite traditional Bengal embroidery commonly known as Kantha work is the speciality of the women who work here. Products, such as sarees, jackets, shawls, bags, table cloth bed spread & batuas are made at the centers of West Bengal.

The designs worked on are of tradional rural motifs. These products have been acknowledged internationally. Some of the products are exported & the money realized is utilized for the development of the trust.
