We believe that that to give shape to our children's future we need to build on their present. It requires their ability to dream, and then backed by skilled guidance, self-motivation, discipline, effort and above all faith, it can become a reality.
KARAM BHOOMI I
Hence we conceived Karam Bhoomi, a joyful action land, to fulfil multi-purpose goals. Built in 1998, Karam Bhoomi I, a 5000 sq.ft. centre, is situated in Rajarhat near Kolkata airport. The centre has two conference halls, reception room, a medical dispensary, open air auditorium and accomodation for 20 persons in two dormitories with 2 rooms for the group leaders or teachers.
Regular camps are organized for children and special endeavour is made to understand them. Career counselling and oppourtunities for higher education are encouraged. To promote their creativity special classes, such as Yoga and Bratachari, Spoken English, Art and Craft, and pottery are organized. In these camps children sing together, watch movies, share ideas and have fun.
Local craft women fill the centre with their warmth, affection, energy and life. It is a chance to connect villages with cities. These various efforts taken together allow the children to gain confidence and assure them that they are not alone in life.
Basic amenities such as food, clothes, shelter and education alone are not enough for the child's personality development. Here at Karam Bhoomi the children get opportunities that help them to bloom.
This step is motivated by the Gandhian principle that planning should be done for the village at grass-root level.

The success of the first Karam Bhoomi situated at Kolkata built in 1996 has motivated us to build a second Karam Bhoomi at Delhi in Palam Vihar 2006. The land has been provided by Chiranjiv Trust on a fifty year lease. Located 10 km from the airport, the center is built in on 800 yard plot and covers over 10,500 sq ft.
It is envisaged to serve as multipurpose Centre.
A residential Old Age Home
A day care for elderly
A non formal school for the children
A holiday home for underprivileged children
Community Development programme
An international centre for visiting students to undertake community development
Dignity for Aged
A unique feature of the Delhi Home is a day activity center for the aged where they will seek fresh energy through yoga & spiritual discourses, with medical camps at regular intervals. It also provides aged citizens an opportunity to serve by involving them meaningfully in the care of children and teenagers.
A full floor has been reserved to house about twenty senior citizens who will share their love with children and compassion with each other and live a life of dignity.
Care for Children
The last 22 years of our experience with homeless children has revealed the importance of a permanent address - a home even if it is a short stay home, where they can return at any stage of their life. It is very important to the children to have their own place that breaks the monotony of their everyday lives. It provides them a feeling of security, help them to relax & foster their creativity. We believe that to give shape to our children's future we need to build on their present. It will instill in them their ability to dream and grow big. Community Outreach programme
It is an effort to run projects to help the community. A segregation based on economic condition is always the root cause of social evils. it will be our endeavour to help people in need. The centre also has a resource centre and encourage interaction between rural and urban India. Science and society is another project which is undertaken. To generate revenue the basement will be made available for private functions in the late afternoons.
International Interaction
DCT has been approached by many institutes to provide an opportunity to their students to learn about social work and community development. We will run short courses designed specially to meet their need.

September 1 complete film with school, have a showcase of the finished film made by students evening a small celebration
About the work shop
To quote her, ”We are bringing both teachers and two students from LA schools to present the workshop to your students. We are also bringing the cameras and computers. We are also bringing a student who is 13 and he is going to make a film here to share with your students on life in his home town and he is going to work with your students to make a film about their hometown and put them together to share in schools in LA. We also expect to be making a documentary on this entire exchange for the City of LA that will be broadcast locally in LA on television. This is a first of its kind international and cultural exchange program so we will all learn a lot but in these troubled times it is a critical exchange of culture for the sake of the next generation. If we succeed in our goals your children will be able to make a film with our children in Los Angeles using the internet exclusively - that will be the first kind of program for interactive exchange for youth in the world to collaborate on a film project! It is worth the effort.”

Dr Shoemaker’s team of nine members. 2 teachers, 3 students, Chris, Dr Suzzane Shoemaker and PR Director and her assistant. Two groups comprising of seven children each will attend the workshop. About Dr Suzanne Shoemaker
Dr. Suzanne Shoemaker has worked for the past 33 years in theater, film and television as a professional director, writer and producer. She has taught on the graduate level at such prestigious Universities as The Ohio State University and Northern Michigan University and founded one repertory theater, one touring children’s theater and one national play righting competition. All of these organizations have endured over twenty years and served as the cornerstones for larger art’s endeavors at Los Angeles.
In 1990 she co-founded Acts of Creation with her husband, Chris Shoemaker. She and her husband have owned and she has successfully financed creative projects that have taken her to the Amazon, China, Iceland, and Scandinavia, France and around the world. She has received a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts grant twice was awarded the outstanding educator in America Award twice from the Office of the President and has originated and passed three bills through Hawaii legislature to fund youth- centered, creative arts projects. She started the family Film festival at Los Angels as a non profit event. Her mission is to empower the underprivileged. She finds her job both rewarding and empowering.
